Coda

Playback

Coda offers multiple playback modes including crossfade, gapless playback, a full queue system, sleep timer, and lock screen controls.

Crossfade

Crossfade smoothly transitions between tracks by overlapping the end of one song with the beginning of the next. Coda uses two simultaneous audio players for gapless crossfade.

Enabling Crossfade

  1. Open the Player screen and tap the More menu (three dots).

  2. Select Settings from the menu.

  3. Toggle Crossfade on and set your preferred duration (1–12 seconds).

How It Works

When crossfade is enabled, Coda creates a second audio player for the next track and ramps volume between them using a smooth curve. The transition duration is fully configurable.

Gapless / Seamless Playback

Seamless playback ensures there is no gap between tracks — ideal for live albums, DJ mixes, or classical music where tracks flow continuously.

Enabling Seamless Mode

Go to Settings and toggle Seamless Playback on. When enabled, crossfade is automatically set to 2 seconds to ensure smooth transitions. Coda pre-creates an audio player for the next track so it's ready to play instantly.

Best Practice

Use seamless mode with crossfade for the smoothest experience. The 2-second crossfade is automatically applied when seamless is enabled.

Queue

The queue shows your upcoming tracks and playback history. Access it by tapping the queue icon in the Player screen.

Queue Features

  • View queue — See all upcoming tracks and recently played songs
  • Drag to reorder — Long-press and drag tracks to rearrange the queue
  • Swipe to delete — Swipe left on any track to remove it from the queue
  • Batch remove — Long-press to enter selection mode, select multiple tracks, then tap delete
  • Add from library — Use the search bar at the bottom of the queue to find and add tracks
  • Clear queue — Tap the clear button to remove all upcoming tracks

Shuffle

Tap the shuffle button to randomize the queue order. Coda uses the Fisher-Yates algorithm for a truly random shuffle. Shuffle can be toggled on or off at any time.

Repeat

Toggle repeat on or off by tapping the repeat button:

  • Repeat Off — Playback stops at the end of the queue
  • Repeat On — The entire queue repeats from the beginning

Sleep Timer

The sleep timer automatically stops playback after a set duration — perfect for listening in bed.

Using the Sleep Timer

  1. Open the More menu from the Player screen.

  2. Select Sleep Timer.

  3. Choose a duration or set a custom time.

Fade Out

In the last 30 seconds before the timer expires, Coda gradually reduces the volume from your current level to zero over 30 seconds. This prevents an abrupt stop and provides a gentle transition to silence.

Lock Screen Controls

Coda integrates with the iOS Control Center and Android lock screen to display playback controls and track metadata. You can play, pause, skip forward, and skip backward directly from the lock screen.

  • Track title and artist are displayed on the lock screen
  • Album artwork is shown as the lock screen background (on supported devices)
  • Seek forward/backward buttons are available

Background Audio

Coda continues playing music when the app is backgrounded or the screen is locked. Background audio is enabled by default and requires notification permissions on Android to maintain the foreground service.

Playback Speed

Adjust playback speed from 0.5x to 2.0x using discrete speed chips in the Player → More → Audio Effects screen. Useful for podcasts, audiobooks, or practice sessions.
